The Coalition for Healthy Air and Safe Roads (CHASR) is a volunteer led coalition of local community groups, schools, houses of worship, PTAs, businesses, and concerned citizens in Alameda County who are united by a shared commitment to protecting public health for all communities in proximity to major highways and thoroughfare roads.

CHASR was formed to advance real, effective solutions for clean and safe environments. We believe that transportation policy decisions should result in a net public benefit and should be geared towards stopping pollution at its source rather than expanding pollution and safety burdens throughout our region. The health and safety of our communities should not be sacrificed for the interests of the trucking industry.

CHASR recognizes the historic and ongoing environmental inequities faced by East and West Oakland and supports targeted solutions that reduce pollution and impacts at their source rather than spreading it to other densely populated neighborhoods. We reject false choices that pit communities against one another in favor of the trucking industry. Instead we advocate for policies that deliver cleaner air and safer roads for all.

Through collaboration, advocacy, and community engagement, CHASR seeks to ensure that the East Bay’s transportation system advances health, safety, equity, and sustainability—now and for future generations.
